More Than Just a Job

Work is a gift from God. It doesn't always feel like it, but according to the Bible, it is. God gave Adam work in the brand new world. God gave Noah work--a job that made absolutely no sense to him. God even gave Jesus work. It stands to reason that He gives us work too.
I have to admit, I've had jobs I did not see as a gift. They were drudgery that I looked for an escape from, and I escaped in ways that were not good--they were not good for me personally or for my family, and there are still consequences we're reaping. I don't recommend escaping from the work God gives you! You will pay a high price for the escape, which is usually much higher than expected.

Instead, I recommend choosing contentment in the work God gives you. More than that, I encourage you to love the work God gives you, even if you don't like it. Is it possible? Absolutely! However, we can only do it with God's help. The good news is that He's ready and waiting to help us.

I know people with mad skills. Unfortunately, they see it as their "job" and don't want to use those skills as part of their ministry. They want to do different things in the church than on the job. But what if God gave them those skills to do more than help support their family? What if God gave them those skills to help His Church?

I know other people with amazing talents in normal, everyday things, but they don't see any value in their gifts. But let me tell you, not everyone can cook, not everyone can fix their car, and not everyone can unclog a sink!

It seems to me that if we would each use whatever God has put in our hands, whether it's a hot pad, a hammer, a pen, a computer, a wrench, a sewing machine--whatever it is!--if we would each use what God has given us, the “big C” Church would be built up and better maintained. After all, the body of Christ is made up of more than a mouth or a face.

How do we do this? Like everything, it has to start with prayer. When you pray, ask him, "Lord, change my heart. Help me see how I can use whatever work You've given me to do as more than a way to put food on my table. Help me see how to use it for Your kingdom, even if it seems worthless in my eyes".

Change your attitude. Don't see everything as a job. Sure, some of it will be, but choose to see your work as a gift to God, both on and off the job site.

Remember that no matter what we do for work or where we do it, we are to live and work as children of God. Yes, that will make us stand out. Yes, people will watch us. But we can be a light in a gloomy, dark place if God shines through us!

God has placed us where we are for a reason. He's given us a job, and whether or not we understand all the "What’s?” and "Why's?”, we need to obey Him, do the job He's given us, and trust Him to use it as He desires.

Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him. Gen 6:22
